The Chinese city of Putuo is offering couples free marriage counseling at the divorce registry at the Civil Affairs Bureau. “Counseling is offered before couples sign divorce papers to give couples a chance to reconsider and see if they can resolve their differences.”
An average of 75 divorces were registered across the city per day last year. “But many of the splits weren’t rational decisions,” said Zhou Jixiang, director of the Shanghai Marriage Management Division. “Marriages are after all quite complicated.”
